What’s is the difference between therapy and counseling?

Therapy is rehabilitative in nature and its goal is to restore the range of functioning needed for individuals to be able to function in their daily lives. Counseling is reflective in nature and its goal is to process/reprocess events, thoughts, ideas, situations and more for meaning and new insights.

Why do I need to know the difference?

Insurance companies need clinical justification for claims submitted under a policy holder. Claims that are submitted without clinical justification will be denied. If you are looking for counseling, it is important to take into consideration the out-of-pocket cost for being seen. Having a budget in mind will help you greatly for negotiating your rate.

How can I get the most out of therapy?

To get the most out of therapy it is important for you to attend every session and complete all homework that is assigned. Becoming aware of yourself and observing your environment will greatly help with coming to session with thoughts, ideas, and topics to unpack and discuss.

Who do you work with?

I do individual therapy with adults 18 years old and up as well as older adults up to 65 years old. I currently do not offer any family or couples therapy at this time.

What languages do you offer psychotherapy in?

I offer psychotherapy and counseling in English only.

What is your availability?

Monday - Fridays from 10am to 8pm with weekends available from 10am to 1pm.

What is the process to get started?

The first step is to contact me so that we can arrange a date and time for your free consultation. The second step after we agree on a time and date is to have our consultation to meet one another on Zoom. The third and final step applies if you would like to move forward, if so then I send your intake paperwork via email, verify your insurance if applicable, and once paperwork and insurance verification are finished or if you are paying out of pocket, I reach out to you to schedule your intake session.

What should I keep in mind for our consultation?

A consultation is time set aside for us to meet one another and have an opportunity to ask questions. Consultations are not meant to be psychotherapy sessions or crisis interventions. To make the most out of our time it would help to have questions already prepared to ask.

What happens at the end of the consultation?

At the end of our consultation, you may vocalize if you wish to move forward or not. If you would like time to think on this, you may choose not to disclose your decision. I normally send my intake paperwork after each consultation via email. These forms should be filled out within 24 hours, if they are not filled out during that time frame, I consider that as an indication from you that you do not wish to move forward.

How long does insurance verification take?

Typically, between one to three days.
